Joe Nickerson is a 23-year-old professional surf photographer based on O'ahu, Hawai'i. Originally from Huntington Beach, California, Joe's life has always revolved around the ocean. From a young age, he engaged in competitive swimming and bodysurfing, eagerly seizing every opportunity to ride the renowned Newport Beach Wedge with friends, satisfying his craving for adrenaline. Years of experience as a waterman fostered his interest in surf photography, particularly in capturing large waves.
In addition to his passion for surf photography, Joe developed a passion for assisting others when he became an Ocean Lifeguard for the Huntington Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Division. Since 2017, Joe has dedicated his summers to lifeguarding, enhancing his medical skills and deepening his understanding of the ocean.
Driven by his love for surf photography, the ocean, and the medical field, Joe made the decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa after completing high school. During his time on O'ahu, Joe successfully balanced his pursuits, simultaneously working towards his nursing degree, lifeguarding during the summer months, and capturing breathtaking images of some of the best surf breaks in the world.
Joe graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 2023 with a BSN and is now a Registered Nurse. Currently, he intends to remain in Hawai'i to pursue his aspiration of becoming an ER Nurse, allowing him to continue his professional endeavors in the medical field and surf photography.
Through his photography, Joe aspires to encapsulate the beauty of the ocean and share his experiences with others, investing countless hours in the pursuit of capturing the perfect moment. Always striving for the perfect shot, Joe is committed to pushing his creative boundaries and evolving as an artist. When he is not occupied with photographing surfers or saving lives, you can find him bodysurfing, diving, hiking, or enjoying the beach with his fiancée and his canine companion.
